In this article, you'll set up a Practical Assessment, assess a learner, and review the result.

A Practical Assessment lets an authorised assessor score a learner's real-world performance against a rubric — proof that a skill is applied, not just completed in a quiz. You define the criteria, weightings, and pass mark; an assessor then observes, scores, and gives feedback, and the system records a clear pass or fail. It works on both the web app and the mobile/handheld app.

Before you begin:Practical Assessments are switched on per organisation. If you don't see Practical Assessments under AdminManage, contact your Customer Success Manager or support to enable it.

The four delivery modes

How an assessment is conducted is set by its delivery mode. Choose the one that matches how the skill is observed:

How to set up a Practical Assessment

Create a Practical Assessment as a cell. Select Quick Actions → Create Cell → Practical Assessment (you can also add the cell inside a Beeline in Build Mode). Give it a name and description, then Create Cell & Start Editing to open the three-step builder: Setup → Rubric → Review.

Step 1 — Setup

Define the basics, choose how the assessment is delivered, and set the grading rules.

  1. Assessment Details — set the Assessment Title and Description, a Validity Period (e.g. 90 days, after which a re-assessment is due), and the Passing Score (%).
  2. Assessment Delivery — choose one of the four delivery modes above.
  3. Who Can AssessAny manager above the learner, or Specific assessors only.
  4. Learner Visibility — control what the learner sees before and after (for example, rubric hidden, full results shown).
  5. Grading & Workflow — fine-tune scoring and feedback rules, such as all criteria required, require assessor notes, overall feedback, pass to progress, and auto-redo on fail.
  6. Scoring & Rewards — set the Excellence Threshold (the score that counts as exceptional) and the Doubloons awarded on pass and on excellence.

Step 2 — Rubric
